Commander of Submarine Group TRIDENT Rear Admiral Tim Giardina is the commander of Submarine Group Trident, Submarine Group 9, and Submarine Group 10. Submarine Group Nine is headquartered at Naval Base Kitsap, Silverdale, Wash., and Submarine Group 10 which is headquartered at Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga. He is responsible for administrative command and control of all U.S. SSBN's and SSGN's in the Pacific Northwest and in Kings Bay, Ga. He assumed duty as commander, Submarine Group Trident on Nov. 8, 2007. |

Rear Adm. Giardina is a 1979 graduate of the U.S.
Naval Academy. He is a graduate of CAPSTONE and numerous Navy Business Courses
and holds an advanced degree in Business Administration.
Following selection for flag rank, he
served as director of Information, Plans and Security and director of Current
Operations on the Navy Staff until October 2007. His previous assignment was as
chief of staff, U.S. 7th Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan. While assigned to 7th Fleet,
he was assigned additional duties as deputy commander and chief of staff for
Joint Task Force 515 in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
As a career submarine officer, Rear Adm.
Giardina has served on both fast attack and ballistic missile submarines in
both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. Upon commissioning in 1979, he entered
the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and reported to the commissioning crew of
USS Ohio (SSBN 726) (Blue). While there, he became the first officer to earn
gold dolphins on a Trident submarine.
Rear Adm. Giardina's other submarine assignments prior to command
included duty in USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) as executive officer, USS
Alaska (SSBN 732) (Gold) as engineer officer, and USS Atlanta (SSN 712) as
navigator/operations officer.
He
commanded Submarine Squadron 17 in Bangor, Wash., which included ten Trident
submarines, from July 2001 to July 2003. His previous command assignment was as
commanding officer of USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) (Gold) from 1996 until 1999.
Rear Adm. Giardina's shore assignments
included duty as senior member of the Tactical Readiness Evaluation Team and
Combat Systems Training Team on the Staff of Commander, Submarine Force, U. S.
Atlantic Fleet. He served as deputy director of Future Operations (J35) on the
staff of U. S. Joint Forces Command, as submarine junior officer detailer at
Naval Personnel Command, and as a member of the Nuclear Propulsion Examining
Board on the staff of the Commander, U. S. Atlantic Fleet.
Rear Adm. Giardina has been awarded the
Legion of Merit (four awards), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the
Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Joint Service Commendation Medal
(two awards), the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the
Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various campaign and
unit awards.
