John Calabro graduated from the USMA in 1968. Commissioned in the Field Artillery, his service in line units included two battery commands. The first of these was in Germany. The second was in Vietnam, where he commanded B Battery 5/16 Artillery, an 8-inch self-propelled howitzer unit that belonged to the First Field Force Artillery.

Other artillery assignments included corps artillery assistant S-3, battalion S-1, and battalion S-3. He graduated from Airborne School, Ranger school, Basic and Advanced Artillery Officers' Courses, and the Armed Forces Staff College.

Having completed a Ph.D. in English at the University of Virginia, he took up duties as an Academy Professor in West Point's English Department in 1982. Since then he has served as the director of both basic and advanced core courses in writing and as a teacher of Philosophy and elective courses in literature. He has chaired or served on numerous important committees, including the Admissions Committee, two Middle-States accreditation committees, the Superintendents' Honor Review Committee, and the Faculty Credentials and Promotions Committee. He achieved the academic rank of Professor in 1992.

Upon retirement from active duty in 1998, he took a position with the West Point Association of Graduates as Director of the Societies program. In 2000, he was promoted to Vice President for Alumni Support, and in 2007, he became the Association's Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
